Year 10 Science assignment - Consumer Chemistry

Search strategy

  1. Select your topic.
  2. Brainstorm and list some key words and phrases that you can use in searching.
  3. Decide how you are going to present your information. You will probably need to collect illustrative material [e.g. photocopy pictures and diagrams, save image files from the internet or CD-ROM] as you search for information.
  4. There are many sources of information available for this topic.

The assessment criteria require you to list at least 3 references in your bibliography. Click here for help on details you need to record in a bibliography, and how to set it out. There is also a print version of this information, and a bibliography record sheet available free [!] at the front counter of the RC.

You have to use at least 2 of the following sources to find your 3 references [e.g. 1 book + 1 CD-ROM + 1 Internet site]:

Books

- REFERENCE books: Use Science encyclopedias [R503]  and Science Year books [R503 YEA} before you use general encyclopedias like World Book!

- use these key words with #3 search on Dynix to find other books....

Food additives
Household chemicals; Cleaning; Cleaning compounds - environmental aspects; Household cleaners
Photography - equipment; Photography - processing
Petroleum
Plastics; Polymers; Recycling
Batteries
Cosmetics
Salinity; Murray River
Acid rain; Pollution
Metals; Metallurgy
Fertilisers and manure; Fertilizers

Glue; Adhesives
GENERAL SEARCH TERMS - Chemical industries; Chemistry, Organic; Chemical engineering

CD-ROMs

- use the same key words to search the networked CD-ROMs:

Science 2.0
Encarta
Webster's Encyclopedia

Internet sites

There is no need to spend time doing your own search!

Click here if you need help with electronic note taking or saving images from the computer.
