Introduction

So you're studying French at Adelaide High but how much do you actually know about the country France? Its impossible to learn about everything but by completing the Treasure Hunt you will get a really quick overview of some aspects of France and its culture and people.

Task and Process

1. In the Questions section answer all the questions in complete sentences IN YOUR OWN WORDS. You will find all the answers using the websites listed in the Resources section. You should also use books and encyclopedias to find answers to your questions.

2. Your answers can be presented as a Word or handwritten document.

Try and include pictures to illustrate your answers. If you are not sure how to download pictures click here for some helpful notes.

3. You must also include a bibliography of the resources you used to compile your answers. What is a bibliography? Click here for some useful notes on compiling bibliographies. If you lose the Webliography record sheet you were given click here to download another copy.

4. In the Extension Question you should focus your research on one topic that interested you in the general questions. Your research should be presented in the form of a 4 or 5 slide PowerPoint presentation which you will present to the class. The presentation should include some interesting facts about the topic and some pictures which illustrate it.

The geography of France
1. What is the population of France? Compare it to Australia’s population.

2. Describe the land area of France in comparison to that of Australia.

3. In how many countries is French a national language? In which continent are most of these countries?

3. Pick one sea or ocean and name the French-speaking islands there. Give 2 interesting facts about one of the countries/islands.

4. Download a map of France and underneath list the main cities, rivers, neighbouring countries and mountain ranges.

5. Write 3-4 sentences about each of the following cities. State their population and something which is special about each city.

6. Compare the population of France with that of Australia. Consider the number of people and also the population density.

7. What are some of the main agricultural products of France? Write 4 or 5 sentences about one of the main agricultural industries of France.

8. What is the name of the French capital and where is it? How many people live there? List 5 interesting facts about Paris.

9. Where are the warmest and coldest parts of France? Give a brief description of the French climate.

10. Australia is divided into states. What 2 ways is France divided administratively? What are these two types of divisions called? How many are there of each type?

11 . What is the name of the tallest mountain in France? Where is it located?

2. Describe a typical French dinner.

3. How many different cheeses are produced in France ? Name and describe 3 different types of French cheeses.

1.When is France's national day celebrated? What is the day called? What is it celebrated in memory of?

2. What is the motto of the French Republic? What does it mean in English?

3. Who is Marianne? Where is she used?

4. What is the name of the French flag? Copy a picture of it into your document.

5. What is the name of the French National Anthem? What are its origins?

6. Who is the President of France? Where does he live?

7. Which currency is used in France? When was it adopted and why? Do other countries have the same currency? Which ones? What is the exchange rate for this currency against the Australian dollar?

1. Having visited a number of sites, it's time to focus in on one area of the research that interested you most. Keep in mind the following question as you conduct your research: if you were French, how would you brag about about the area/topic that you have chosen to do the extra research on?

2. Your research should be presented in the form of a 4 or 5 slide PowerPoint presentation which you will present to the class. The presentation should include some interesting facts about the topic and some pictures which illustrate it. The facts can be in note form.
