Year 10 English Assignment :  Guitar Highway Rose  by Brigid Lowry  

During this unit on shared prose you will write a series of items to demonstrate your understanding of the novel and its characters, as well as the importance of audience and purpose when creating texts.

These items have different purposes and differing audiences, therefore they will look and sound different. They should be presented as you would expect for real life. The novel must be used as a reference to gain information about events, characters, settings etc.

  1.      A News article

Task: report either the disappearance of Rosie and Asher OR their finding.

  NB you must use some of the information from the novel, but you may embroider and create some events not in the text. See pg 124-133, 178-188, 190-199 for ideas.

Audience: general/adult, buying daily capital city paper

Format: must have

  • Columns, 

  • Headline , 

  • By-line,

  • Photo/graphic eg map

 

2.       An official report 

– choose (a) or (b)

Task (a): A police report documenting events of any of the disappearances that occur.

Audience: police officers and media outlets (and possibly the Coroner’s office)

Format: must have 

  • headings, sub-headings, 

  • Formal language , 

  • Use of 3rd person objective, 

  • Title, name, signature of person writing report

 

Task (b): The medical report on either Rosie’s or Asher’s injuries

Audience: medical/hospital staff

Format: must have 

  • headings, sub-headings, 

  • Formal language, 

  • Use of 3rd person objective, 

  • Title, name, signature of person writing report

 

3.       An A4 folded pamphlet on a topic from the novel you have researched.

Ideas for topics include:

Audience: adults interested in the topic eg for travel destination

Format: must have 

  • an A4 sheet folded into a pamphlet  

  • Acknowledgment of sources

  • Use of visual and written information  

  • Eye catching layout

4.      Missing persons poster/milk carton

Task: design a missing person notice either for an A4 poster or a milk carton for one of Angel, Rosie or Asher. NB please ensure the milk carton is well washed!

Audience: general public, including children

Format must haves 

  • name of missing person, age  

  • Physical description and ‘photo’  

  • Last known whereabouts  

  • Contact details of police

 

Additional information

Each assignment will be marked out of 20.

They may be completed in any order, but for each due date, an assignment must be submitted.

  Your work should be planned and drafted, then presented neatly in the appropriate format.
