| Some
CD programmes such as World Book have a Notepad into
which you can copy just the information you need.
If not, (or alternatively,) you
can copy the information into a Word document, which is
quite easy with Windows 95...
Scan
the article/web page to determine if there is any relevant information
for your requirements, then use the mouse to select only
the relevant text.
Copy'n'Paste
method
- Either
go to Edit -> Copy
- Or
click the right mouse button and then click on Copy
-
Click on the Start button (located in bottom left corner)
and open the Word programme as normal. You will now have 2 buttons
on the task bar at the bottom of the screen.
- Either
click on Edit -> Paste.
- Or
click the right mouse button and then click on Paste
The text you selected will magically appear in this new Word
document.
Drag'n'drop
method
- After
opening a new Word document, go back and click on the selected
text. Without releasing the mouse button, drag the cursor
down to Word button on the task bar. The cursor will change
its appearance as you drag it.
- The
Word window will open automatically. Still without releasing
the mouse button, drag the cursor into that window.
- Release
the mouse button and the copied text will 'drop' into the document.
Hyperlinks can be easily copied using this method and will retain
their link (unless you attempt to include non-hyperlink text in
the transfer).
NOTE: If you let go of the mouse button too early, this method
will not work!
To return to the CD programme
or Netscape and select more text,
-
Click on the CD programme or Netscape button that will
be located on the bottom task bar of your screen; this will
to reactivate that programme.
-
You can switch between the two programmes by using the buttons
on this task bar.
Continue to Copy'n'Paste or Drag'n'Drop text in this
manner until you have all the information you require. Don't forget
to save to your floppy disk at regular intervals, to avoid losing
valuable work!!
Please note that you
cannot do this with graphics/pictures, only text.
To
copy/save graphics,
- Click
on the chosen graphic with the right mouse button.
- Choose
File -> Save image as and save to your floppy disk. Make
sure you give the image a meaningful filename - not more than
8 letters + correct suffix - usually .gif or .jpg
That
image file can now be inserted into a Word document (version 7.0
or higher) or a web page(html document). Ask
the teacher librarian if you are not sure how to do this.
You should ensure that you
copy & paste the
title, author and address of the
source you are noting from – this is required for your bibliography.
You can now print out your copied and pasted information
as is, or use the word processor to manipulate and reformat the
text before printing it out. Alternatively, save the information
to your own disk and add other information from other web sites
and/or CD-ROMs. This can reduce the number of pages printed, which
is less wasteful of paper and costs you less too!
REMEMBER:
Avoid plagiarism and don’t
forget to record your sources for a bibliography
or future reference.
Do not hesitate to ask for help from RC
staff.
