A
bibliography is a list of books, magazines etc, which have been used
for an assignment. If you have quoted or referred to specific ideas
or information you should also provide footnotes and page references.
Verifiable sources add authority and credence to your assignment and
bibliographies are normally a requirement for senior school assignments.

Recording
Sources
When noting information from any source you should
always record the required bibliographic data before moving onto the
next source.
- Method
1
A brochure is available at the Front Desk - photocopy and use
the form inside this brochure to record the bibliographic details
for any assignment. Do NOT present the form as your bibliography!
See below for how to correctly set out bibliographies.
When
using the Internet or CD-ROMs you can record your sources electronically
as you find and use them....
- Method
2
Copy'n'Paste' or Drag'n'Drop
the required data to the beginning of your electronic notes from that
source.
Start another page or another document for each new source.
- Method
3 - Electronic Bibliographies
Set up a spreadsheet or table in a separate window to the Internet
or CD-ROM you are using:
You will need 5 or more columns in the spreadsheet or table; the headings
will vary slightly according to the format of your source:
- Format
of source
|
Bibliographic
Data required |
| Books |
Author | Title | Date of publication | Publisher | Place |
| Encyclopedias |
Author | Title | Date of publication | Publisher | Place | Volume
No. |
| Magazines |
Author | Title of article | Title of Magazine | Issue No. & Date
| Page No.| Publisher | Place |
| CD-ROMs |
Author | Title | Date of publication | Publisher | Place |
| Internet
etc |
Author | Title | Date of publication | URL | Date accessed |
NB
- if no date of publication mentioned, use nd.
NOTE:
if an Internet site has no author or date, even when you backtrack to
the home page, reconsider using the information as it lacks authority!
You
may wish to set up separate spreadsheets or tables for each type of format.
Once the 'pro-forma' is set up it is easy to switch between that and the
information source by clicking on the buttons on the task bar. As you
find useful information either copy'n'paste
or drag'n'drop text into your spreadsheet
or table.
NOTE: The drag'n'drop method does not work with URLs (use copy'n'paste)
or graphics (see How to copy/save
graphics).
Setting
out Bibliographies
Bibliographies are set out in a special way and there are strict rules
for this. Your teacher, especially in the senior school, may specify a
particular 'convention' or layout, otherwise refer to the examples below:-
Take
special note of alphabetical order by author’s name,
title underlining and punctuation.
