ONLINE LITERACY
http://www.nexus.edu.au/teachstud/onlit/index.html
This is a DETE website that provides learning strategies for a range of
middle school subjects. ESL is not included, but some of the activities
under English are useful. You, (or your students!) can download proformas
to help them set their own goals for improving their speaking and undertake
some critical literacy. It provides some assistance in writing bibliographies
as well as dealing with afew written genres: recounts, arguments, narratives.
There are some weaknesses e.g. does not include connectives at the start
of paragraphs in an argument.
INTERCULTURAL EMAIL CLASSROOM
CONNECTIONS http://www.iecc.org
IECC is a free service, based in America, that can connect you with other
teachers wishing to set up on-line projects between classes. Your
students can exchange projects, email as pen pals (keypals!), hold discussions
and respond to surveys. The topics are extremely varied and seem to attract
input from USA, Japan, Scandinavia and Australia. It has potential for
the ESL Studies research study.
BUSHNET
http://www.bushnet.qld.edu.au/
It does not immediately appear to be related to ESL, but it is a good
example of what our students could do. It is an Australian network of
isolated schools in north Queensland. We could do similar things and publish
student work on our intranet, and eventually the world wide web (when
the school website is finished!)
