~ Assessment Rubrics ~

An assessment rubric helps teachers assess the quality of student participation and performance in an assignment against a set of specific criteria.

An assessment rubric allows the teacher to comment on the degree to which students have succeeded in undertaking the specific components of the task.

Advantages of assessment rubrics are:

  • Assessment is undertaken in a more consistent manner across a class.
  • They make teachers assess against set criteria
  • Students know exactly what they will be assessed on and what they need to do to achieve   a higher grade
  • They show students and teachers which areas of teaching and learning need further instruction and practice

Assessment rubrics come in a variety of forms but they all have in common.

  •  A list of stated objectives or criteria against which students will be assessed

  •  A numerical or comment range which rates student performance
  • A description for each level indicating the degree to which students have satisfied the set criteria

Creating an assessment rubric is not as hard as you think it will be. There are sites on the Internet which will help you create rubrics online. All you need to do is work out what the assessment task is and select which criteria you want the students assessed against from the list provided and the rest will be done for you.

The following websites will help you create your assessment rubrics.
