Work Experience Information

Year 10 Adelaide High School students are provided with many opportunities to develop the capabilities of work, learning and communication as part of the compulsory SACE Personal Learning Plan (PLP), so that they can meet the Performance Standards.

PLP Task 2 is a Work Experience Reflection task.

In 2012, all Year 10 students will be required to do Work Experience in Term 2, Week 6: Monday, 28 May – Friday, 1 June. All students are required to complete and submit to the school the original 2012 Workplace Learning Agreement Form by March 23.

Prior to Work Experience, Year 10 students will undergo compulsory training at school to raise their awareness of Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare legislation and issues in the workplace, so that they can understand the need to be safe at work at all times. This Work Ready Program, together with the workplace induction each student should receive on the first day of their placement, gives them a good grounding in workplace safety issues. All students are expected to be supervised adequately by a staff member from the workplace whilst on placement.  Adelaide High School staff members will also contact the students on placement.

Students who cannot complete work experience in Week 6, Term 2 need to see their Pastoral Care teacher or Livia D’Aloia as soon as possible to negotiate an alternate time. For 2012 these are as follows:

either during the week of the interstate exchange, if they are not participating in the sporting exchange program: Term 3, Week 5 (August 13 – 17)

or during the 2012 school holidays:

End of Term 1 holidays:

  • Tues 10 April – Fri 13 April (a four day placement)
  • Mon 16 April – Fri 20 April (a five day placement)

End of Term 2 holidays:

  • Mon 2 July – Fri 6 July (a five day placement)
  • Mon 9 July – Fri 13 July (a five day placement)

End of Term 3 holidays:

  • Mon 24 Sept – Fri 28 Sept (a five day placement)
  • Tues 2 Oct – Fri 5 Oct (a four day placement)

Please encourage your son / daughter to find a suitable work placement as early as possible and to consider a broad range of avenues. Some fields, such as the medical field, are harder to access than others, but it is vital at this stage nevertheless to encourage the students to gain some practical knowledge of how a workplace operates. Prospective medical students, for example, may need to consider an allied health field or even another field altogether. Students develop generic workplace understandings and skills in this week and consolidate this understanding when writing their PLP Reflection Task. The students also receive a Supervisor’s Report Form, that can store in their Transition Folder and refer to when writing their PLP Reflection Task and applying for part time jobs in the future.

Students who wish to do a placement either a primary school, especially a Catholic Primary school, or a child care centre may need to secure a police check. Students need to check with the contact person at the site to ascertain if this is a requirement and if so, they need to visit www.police.sa.gov.au, scroll down to Changes to Information Released on a National Police Check, click on the national police checks section and follow the links to the PD267 National Police Check application form.

A person of any age may apply for a National Police Certificate.  If a child is under the age of 16 years, a guardian must also sign the application form on the second page. A police check is valid for as long as an organisation allows it to be.  SA Police does not stipulate the time frame in which a police check must be completed. A student may apply for the Individual Concession fee by supplying a copy of their student identification card when attending the police station.  At the time of writing this document, the fee was stated as $38.25.  However, should the student be applying as a volunteer, the fee was stated as $34.25.

Students who will complete Structured Work Placement, as part of their VET course during the April school holidays 2012 should see Ms D’Aloia to negotiate alternatives for the May Work Experience placement, such as gaining some experience in a different industry area.

Please Livia D’Aloia, VET and Enterprise Coordinator, on 8231 9373 or via email (livia.daloia@adelaidehs.sa.edu.au) should you require further information or assistance regarding work experience.

Please contact her also if you can offer work placements to some of our students, either during Week 6 of Term 2 or at any other time listed above.
