
Students at Adelaide High School are provided with various co-curricular initiatives that may not normally occur as part of the day to day programs within the school.
Examples of Creatives Arts opportunities
School Musicals
School Musicals occur biennially. These musicals allow students an opportunity to perform to a public audience in a professional manner. All students from Years 9 – 12 may audition for the musical. The cast, band and tech crew of approximately 60 students rehearse over a 4 month period culminating in Public and Primary School Performances. Musicals have included: Guys and Dolls, Bye Bye Birdie, Man O Steel, Disco Inferno and Back to the 80’s and Leader of the Pack. 2013 will see a production of The Wizard of Oz.

Running With Scissors
A new initiative in the Creative Arts in 2010 was the Running with Scissors Theatre Company. This company was formed to allow students the ability to improve their skills as an actor/performer whilst working in a professional environment at “Higher Ground” in the Adelaide CBD. Students learn skills in Administration, Stage Management and Technical Production. In it’s inaugural year the company was formed by auditioning students from Years 9 to 11. In proceding years Year 8 students will be auditioned to gain the right to join the company. In 2010 the company performed, “rorriMMirror” and “Miss Pettigrew’s Little Book on Etiquette for the Young Existentialist”. In 2011 the second instalment of the saga “Henrietta St” first performed in 2008 continued in “Tinker’s Curse”. RWS will have another production in Semester 2 2013.

Performance Ensembles
Performance ensembles at Adelaide High School include Stage Band, Concert Band, String Ensemble and Adelaide Vocal. Stage Band is the advanced ensemble and entry into this is by invitation from music staff. This band provides the musicians for school musicals and Cabaret Night is their feature presentation. Concert Band is a training band for intermediate students. All students who are learning an instrument at school are obliged to join this band when their teacher considers them ready to do so. This band performs at Middle School Speech Day and Music Concerts. Adelaide Vocal is the school’s vocal ensemble. This group is open to any student in the school who wishes to join. Adelaide Vocal performances may include Cabaret Night, Converstasione, Old Scholars’ Dinner, Formal Assemblies, and the MacRobertson exchange. The string ensemble is primarily made up of string students but is open to anyone who would like to join. The ensemble plays at music performance nights.

Our teaching emphasis in the Arts is directed towards promoting individuality, teamwork, the generation of creative ideas and activities, performance, problem solving, the development of aesthetic values, the development of various Arts skills and an appreciation of the Arts in a variety of cultures and settings.
